Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

It follows a set series of postures (asanas) that combine breathing with movement. The term Vinyasa has different meanings but principally refers to the number of breaths between asanas and the series of movements that link one posture to another in the series.

Ujjayi

Breath is life. Each breath is a vital act. In this style of Yoga, force, resistance and heat are integral aspects. The perfected practice is a form of dynamic meditation.


Series

Asthanga Vinyasa Yoga consists of three series. The primary series is the basis of the style. The second and third series are for truly dedicated practitioners.

Beryl Bender Birch, who caused a sensation with her book, "Power Yoga", deserves credit for popularizing the Astanga method of Patabhi Jois.

Krishnamacharya

The Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga style is a powerful and dynamic form of Yoga developed first by Krishnamacharya and then propagated by his disciple Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.

Pattabhi Jois

Pattabhi Jois

Shri K. Pattabhi Jois is the creator and disseminator of this style. In 1948 he founded the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute with the intent to explore the curative values of Yoga as it is described in the ancient texts. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois is best known for his teachings of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Sri Pattabhi Jois developed the Vinyasa series.
